Surfing Cold Hawaii: the local guide
Every surf spot from Hanstholm to Agger, with honest skill levels, the wind directions that actually work, wetsuit thickness by season, and where to rent a board. Written by people who live on this coast.
Cold Hawaii is the North Sea coastline of Thy in northwest Denmark. It stretches roughly 55 kilometres from Hanstholm in the north to Agger Tange in the south, and it is one of the best cold-water surf regions in Northern Europe. The name came from surfers who found the waves reminiscent of Hawaii, only with colder water and a Nordic landscape. It stuck.
Klitmoller, a village of about 800 people, is the recognised centre of the sport in Denmark and hosts an international windsurfing World Cup event. Hanstholm, 15 minutes north, marks the top end of the same surf area and holds five spots of its own, ranging from a forgiving beginner wave to one of the most demanding breaks in the country.
Nearly every spot is reachable from a car park on the coast road. Beach access is free, there are no permits, and outside the summer weeks you will often share a break with only a handful of people.
The spots
Every surf spot in Cold Hawaii
Listed north to south. Levels are honest, not marketing: if a spot says advanced, treat it that way. The North Sea here is powerful and the currents are real.
North: Hanstholm
Fisken (Fish Factory)
The best place to start in Cold Hawaii. The pier provides shelter and produces consistent, forgiving waves. Good parking right at the harbour, which matters when you are learning and carrying gear.
Hamborg
Open sand beach with softer, more forgiving waves. A good choice for longboarders and anyone stepping up from a school lesson to their first independent session.
Fishermans Corner
The calmest spot in the Hanstholm area. Useful when everything else is too heavy, or when you simply want time on the water without pressure.
Molen (the pier)
Right at Hanstholm harbour. The pier structure shapes more controlled, predictable waves than the open beaches nearby.
Middles
A reef break with stronger, more technical waves. Not a place to learn. When it works it is one of the better rides in the north of the region.
Fakir
The most demanding spot in Hanstholm. Steep and powerful, with a short window when conditions line up. Experienced surfers only.
Middle: Klitmoller to Norre Vorupor
The Harbour, Klitmoller
Sheltered by the harbour, which makes the waves more predictable than the exposed breaks. The natural second step after Fisken, and close to the surf schools.
The Point, Klitmoller
The most famous wave in Cold Hawaii and the venue for international competitions. A reef break with long, rideable walls when the swell is right. It draws surfers from across Europe.
Krik Vig
Sand beach south of Klitmoller with open, approachable waves. Another solid option for longboarding and early progression.
Stenbjerg
A raw, exposed spot at an old beach-fishing village 8 km south of Klitmoller. Powerful waves and a stone reef close to shore make it technical. Bring experience.
Norre Vorupor
Flat sand beach with consistent swell that works in a wide range of wind directions. Heavily used by locals, and one of the most reliable spots on the coast.
South: Agger and Thyboron
Agger
Close to Agger Tange at the southern tip of Thy. Strong waves and very few people, at the price of a longer drive from Hanstholm.
Thyboron
At the entrance to the Limfjord, on the far side of the Thyboron channel. A distinctive spot when conditions align, reached by the short Agger–Thyboron ferry.

What wetsuit you actually need
A wetsuit is required in every month of the year. There is no summer here where you can surf in boardshorts.

Plenty of local surfers simply run a 4/3 all year and add a hood and boots in winter. If you own one suit and want it to cover a whole trip, that is the one to bring.
Season and conditions
When to come
Autumn, September to November, is the best season. Stronger Atlantic swells arrive, the water still holds some summer warmth, and there are far fewer people in the water. This is also when Klitmoller hosts its World Cup windsurfing event, usually in October or November, which is free to watch from the beach.
Summer brings the nicest weather and the warmest water, but the weakest and least consistent waves. It is a good time to learn, less good if you have travelled for the surf.
Winter is serious. The sea is dramatic, the coast is empty, and with the right suit it can be the most rewarding surfing of the year.
Wind: northwest through southwest, onshore to side-onshore, produces the best waves along this coast. Most spots north and south of Klitmoller work in a northwesterly. Check the forecast on windguru.cz or a similar service before you drive, because conditions change quickly here.
Gear and lessons
Where to rent a board
There is no board rental in Hanstholm itself. This surprises people, so plan for it: drive 15 minutes south to Klitmoller, where the surf industry is concentrated.
Cold Hawaii Surf Camp is the largest school and camp, offering lessons at all levels plus board and wetsuit rental. WestWind runs surf and kite lessons with rental. Surf Pro caters to experienced surfers with gear and service.
Between them you can arrive with nothing and be in the water the same day, at any level. Klitmoller is a small village, so it is worth calling ahead outside the summer season.
Practical
Getting here and staying
Hanstholm sits at the northern tip of Thy in northwest Jutland. A car is effectively necessary, both to reach the region and to move between spots. From Copenhagen it is just under five hours by road, from Aarhus about two hours twenty, and from Aalborg roughly an hour and twenty. The nearest railway station is Thisted, around 20 minutes away, with connections towards Struer.
Hanstholm has 2,058 residents, one of Denmark's largest fishing harbours, restaurants, supermarkets and a campsite. Klitmoller is smaller but has the surf culture, a café and a handful of places to stay. Parking is free everywhere in the area, and beach access costs nothing.
Much of the coastline lies inside Thy National Park , Denmark's first national park, opened in 2008. Access is free and unrestricted, but stay on marked paths in protected zones and keep dogs on a lead during the nesting season from April to July.
